Is External Task a wait state?

According the documentation external tasks can be viewed as similar to User Tasks. User Tasks are explicitly wait states, however there is no mention if the same applies to External Tasks.

BTW I just found this post https://blog.camunda.org/post/2017/03/camunda-bpm-camel-0.5.0/
which explicitly says that external tasks are wait states. Maybe parts of this can be added to official documentation?
