Camunda is not able to resolve java delegate after timer

I am facing a strange issue where Camunda is not able to resolve my service task the second time , when it is looped through a timer. It gives an exception saying it cannot. Sometimes it fails through the third iteration of the timer

This is the below exception
org.camunda.bpm.engine.ProcessEngineException: Unknown property used in expression: ${itxindelegate}. Cause: Cannot resolve identifier ‘itxindelegate’

It is failing at the service task named Get Job status from itx. In the first pass it is able to resolve it and when it loops through the timer, it gives the above exception

Its strange it parses it correctly the first time and then cannot resolve it in the next iteration or the one after that

This is happening for version 7.7

does this error happens after a restart of the application server?

Please verify that the process engine configuration property ‘jobExecutorDeploymentAware’ is set to true.

This happens without restart of the application server

It is weird because it is able to resolve the delegate the first time after the timer in the service task,
Sometimes it fails after the timer is called again . After the time fires, it says it cannot resolve identifier. Sometimes it happens after 1st loop through the timer and sometimes in the third iteration
I will anyways set the parameter and try…Do you think there could be any other issue?

I have set this true and seems to work. But when i redeploy my application all the workflows fail with delegate property not found. I have to drop all the camunda tables and create it again and then it works. But any time i redeploy my code it fails to start any workflow

The jobExecutorDeploymentAware works , but if i redeploy the application all workflows fails
They dont even enter the delgegate method. Just get a 500 error, but the execution never enters the delegate

I am again facing the same problem even with setting jobExecutorDeploymentAware to true
I am using jobs by priority and have set those paramters

Is any of this causing the issue with the service task after the timer executes?
It is intermittent again. Failing once in 2 times

Is there any alternative i can use apart from timer? I need to wait and check for a specific status . If not done wait again and check. The timer does not seem to be working

I figured what the problem is . I have deployed the Camunda Cockpit web app, along with my web app that has the embedded process engine. When both of the them are deployed together , i get the issue of cannot resolve delegate after timer.If i remove the Camunda Cockpit app, i do not have the issue
How should i deploythe Camunda Cockpit , i have just modified the data source to point to the same database as my web app that has the embedded process engine.
Should i modify any of the process engine settings for that ?

I also i see the process engine name is called default in the cockpit app. I was also using the same name in my web app. I am not sure if that is causing the issue. I will anyway change that and test it out

I’m happy that you found a way to fix the issue.

Can you tell me more about your setup?
How many process engines do you use? Do you have a cluster?
What Camunda Cockpit web app do you use?
Why do you use a Cockpit web app instead of embedding Cockpit in your app?
Do you run Cockpit web app and your app in the same application server?

We see that people embed Cockpit into their applications (e.g. using the Spring Boot Starter).

I have one web app with an embedded process engine.(which has all my workflows)
I am also using a standalone camunda cockpit deployed in the same server. This points to the same data source (camunda schema) my other web app points to
I dont have a cluster setup
How can i embed the cockpit in my web app? I am not using spring boot and using normal spring mvc

Also i am using prioritized jobs through the job executor, have set the relevant properties in the process engine. I have deployed my application in Tomcat

I also have a question on the number of simultaneous processes i can execute in parallel ,
I always have 6 process instances that will be running in background to see if there are any jobs to process . After it is done , goes to a timer for 3 minutes and checks again. If it finds something to do, invokes instances of different workflows.
How can i configure the number of process instances to run in parallel.
with the default configuration , the thread pool size is 10. But since i have 6 always running in the background, it gives room for 4 to execute. How can i increase this number to 10 ?

If i configure the max size of threads to say 16 in the job executor configuration, will it work?

Hi @badri_s,

unfortunately, I can’t show you an example how to embed Cockpit in your Spring application. However, you can have a look at the Spring Boot starter. I guess the integration should be similar.

Regarding the number of running process instances (this should be ask in a different thread), there is no limit of parallel process instances (in general). In your example, the background processes should run only a short time (check if jobs are available and start process instances) and when wait. When the process instance waits at a timer event then this doesn’t block the job executor or process engine.

I had the same issue, solved it by setting the service task to “asynchronous before” and “exclusive”.

The underlying problem may be related to the fact that Camunda engine instances synchronize via the database. Now Cockpit does not really change any process instance unless you tell it to (or should not?), but “asynchronous” marks a point where a process might be taken over by another engine, so that seems to solve this esoteric problem as well.

The mechanism of marking tasks as “asynchronous” should be documented better IMHO.

This helped. I also noticed that using a timer start for a process in combination with a service task that does a lookup for a delegate doesn’t work for the first few mnutes. My guess is that Camunda or Spring boot are not fully ready when the timer kicks in.
